The entire structure is built in solid white marble, with some inlaid stones and gems. You see the little domes on either side of the big dome? This is the Western face, but from the Northern face, inside the left dome, it’s made of solid white marble, but the right dome (so it’s the left dome from the view you’re looking at in this picture), inside it is red sandstone, not marble. This was because Moghul emperor Shahjahan wanted to prove that only God could make something entirely perfect, like he had with everything on this earth. So, Shahjahan made this huge structure, that took 22 years and 20,000 people to build, imperfect on purpose, just so no one would outdo God.
